Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based approach that blends cognitive-behavioral strategies with mindfulness practices. Originally developed to support individuals struggling with intense emotions and self-destructive behaviors, DBT helps people learn how to better understand, regulate, and cope with their feelings. The “dialectical” aspect refers to balancing acceptance of yourself as you are with the motivation to make positive changes.

DBT focuses on building skills in four key areas: mindfulness (staying present in the moment), distress tolerance (navigating crises without making them worse), emotion regulation (managing overwhelming feelings), and interpersonal effectiveness (improving communication and relationships). Through a combination of individual therapy, skills training, and practical exercises, clients are supported in developing healthier ways to respond to life’s challenges.

DBT can be especially effective for individuals who experience intense emotions, frequent conflict in relationships, or patterns of impulsive behavior. It is often recommended for those coping with borderline personality disorder, chronic anxiety or depression, self-harm, or difficulties with emotional regulation. At its core, DBT offers concrete tools for building resilience, creating stability, and fostering a more balanced and fulfilling life.
